A week after a four-storey building in CBD Belapur collapsed during heavy rains, resulting in three deaths and two injuries, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has identified and prepared 55 relief shelters across various locations for disaster situations.
The civic body has partnered with 114 NGOs to provide food for up to 15,000 people in emergencies. These shelters include schools, temples, and community centers. Following the collapse of the Indira Niwas building in Shahbaz Village, affected residents have been relocated to a relief shelter in Agroli, Belapur, where they are receiving food and other essential services.
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized that a disaster management plan was in place before the monsoon season began. “We have identified safe shelters to quickly accommodate victims in case of any disaster,” Shinde said. He added that the shelters have been upgraded to ensure prompt relocation and are equipped with necessary amenities to avoid inconveniences for the displaced.
In addition to building collapses, the NMMC is preparing for other emergencies, such as water ingress during heavy rains. The shelters are equipped to provide meals, medications, and other relief services.
The NMMC has also taken action against dilapidated buildings by cutting off water and electricity supplies and relocating residents to safer locations. Shinde called on residents to cooperate with the civic body to ensure effective relief efforts and prevent loss of life.
